Machine Polishing in Stages

What Paint Correction Can Do for Your Car

Paint correction is the careful machine polishing of your paintwork to reduce or remove swirl marks, scratches and other defects that washing cannot shift. At Ride Effect it is carried out in three stages, so the level of polishing can be matched to the condition of the paint, from a single fine polish to three cutting and finishing stages.

Correction is patient, careful work. Before any machine work, the car is washed, decontaminated and dried so it is ready to be treated, and the trims are masked to keep polish off them. Each stage then works across the paint with the compound and pad combination it calls for.

We carry out paint correction on your drive, at work or at our unit, for drivers across Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Northampton and Towcester. Because a correction can take from 1 to 5 days depending on the stage, we agree the plan and the location with you before the work begins.

Book Stage 2

A Stage 2 Correction uses a medium cutting compound to remove swirl marks, light scratches and moderate defects, then a finishing polish and pad to refine the paint further. It suits cars showing moderate swirling and light scratches.

Swirls, Scratches and Holograms

How Paint Gets Swirled and Scratched

Swirl marks are fine scratches in the clear coat, the top layer of your paint. They are hard to see in flat light, but in sunlight or under a street light they show as fine circles around the light source and make the paint look dull. Most swirl marks are caused by unsafe washing and drying, when grit is dragged across the paint by a sponge, a mitt or a towel.

Scratches are deeper marks that cut further into the clear coat, and marring is a general dulling of the surface caused by many light marks together. Holograms are faint, hazy trails that seem to move as you walk around the car in the sun. They are usually left behind when machine polishing has not been refined with a finishing polish.

The Three Stages

Three Stages Matched to Your Paint

Stage 1 Enhancement is best suited to paintwork in good condition, with no visible swirls, surface scratches or significant marring. A finishing polish and finishing pad refine the paint in a single stage, on the paintwork and the lights, and bring out its natural shine. It is not abrasive enough to remove swirl marks or scratches, but it removes contamination, enhances gloss, reduces light imperfections and gives a refreshed, like new appearance. Stage 1 takes 1 to 2 days and starts from £250 for a small car and from £400 for an extra large vehicle.

Stage 2 Correction is best suited to vehicles with moderate swirl marks and light scratches. It uses two polish and pad combinations: a medium cutting compound removes swirl marks, light scratches and moderate paint defects, then a finishing polish and pad refine the paintwork further. The preparation, masking, panel wipe and protection are the same as on Stage 1. Stage 2 takes 1 to 2 days and starts from £450 for a small car and from £600 for an extra large vehicle.

Stage 3 Correction is best suited to vehicles with heavy swirl marks, scratches and other paint defects. It uses three compound and pad stages: a heavy cut for deeper swirls and scratches, a cutting polish for further swirl marks, then a finishing polish. Raj aims for a finish clear of swirls, marring and holograms. Stage 3 takes 2 to 5 days and starts from £700 for a small car and from £950 for an extra large vehicle. Every size is listed on our prices page.

Sanding and Panel Wipes

The Careful Steps Between the Stages

Some scratches are too deep for compounds alone. On a Stage 3 Correction, sanding can be included for heavier scratches: the area around the scratch is carefully levelled, then refined through the compound and pad stages until it is ready for the finishing polish. Sanding is only included where a heavier scratch calls for it.

Every stage includes a panel wipe. It removes the oils and residue that polishing leaves behind, so that what you see is the paint itself, with nothing filling or hiding fine marks. On a Stage 3 Correction, a panel wipe is carried out between each stage, so every step is judged on the true finish before the next one begins.

I honestly cannot recommend Raj from Ride Effect enough. The level of detail, care, and pride he puts into his work is on another level. He took his time, didn’t rush anything, and the results speak for themselves.

Finishing the Paint

Protecting Your Paint After a Correction

The side of a red Alfa Romeo 4C, polished and protected

Every stage finishes with a sealant, which adds gloss and durable protection to the freshly corrected paint. If you would like protection that lasts longer, you can replace the sealant on any stage with a ceramic coating from £350, a graphene coating from £400 or a self healing coating from £500, all three protecting for 3 to 5 years.

Once the paint has been corrected, the way it is washed has a big effect on how long it stays that way. Because most swirl marks come from unsafe washing and drying, we recommend safe hand washing with the two bucket method, pH neutral shampoo and clean microfibre towels. Our safe wash method explains how we wash every car we look after.

Good to Know

Questions We Get Asked

Something else? See every question or call 07734 374012.

What Is Paint Correction?

Paint correction is machine polishing that reduces or removes swirl marks, scratches and other defects in the top layer of a car’s paint. We carry it out in three stages, from a single fine polish for paint in good condition to three compound and pad stages for heavy swirl marks and scratches.

What Causes Swirl Marks on a Car?

Most swirl marks are caused by unsafe washing and drying. When grit is dragged across the paint by a dirty sponge, mitt or towel, it leaves fine scratches in the clear coat that show up as circles in sunlight. Safe hand washing with the two bucket method helps to stop them coming back.

Which Paint Correction Stage Do I Need?

The stage you need is decided by the condition of your paint. Stage 1 suits paint in good condition with no visible swirls, Stage 2 suits moderate swirl marks and light scratches, and Stage 3 suits heavy swirl marks, scratches and other defects. Tell us about the paint when you contact us, and we will suggest the stage that suits it.

How Long Does Paint Correction Take?

Paint correction takes 1 to 2 days for a Stage 1 Enhancement or a Stage 2 Correction, and 2 to 5 days for a Stage 3 Correction. We agree the timing with you before the work begins, along with where it is done: on your drive, at work or at our unit.

How Much Does Paint Correction Cost?

Paint correction starts from £450 for a Stage 2 Correction and from £700 for a Stage 3 Correction on a small car. On an extra large vehicle, Stage 2 starts from £600 and Stage 3 from £950. A Stage 1 Enhancement starts from £250, and prices may vary depending on location.

Can Paint Correction Remove Deep Scratches?

Paint correction can reduce deeper scratches, and on a Stage 3 Correction sanding can be included for heavier scratches. How far a scratch can be taken out depends on how deep it goes, so no stage can promise to remove every mark, and we will talk it through with you before any work starts.

What Are Holograms on Car Paint?

Holograms are faint, hazy trails in the paint that show up in direct sunlight and seem to shift as you move. They are usually left behind when machine polishing is not refined with a finishing polish. Every one of our stages ends with a finishing polish, and a Stage 3 Correction aims for a finish without holograms.
