When a Smell Stays in the Cabin
Car odour removal at Ride Effect is carried out with our Odour Eliminator, an add on that uses ozone (O3) technology. The machine generates ozone, an unstable gas, which breaks down and neutralises unpleasant smells, bacteria, mould and smoke at the molecular level through oxidation. It is added to a valet or a detail, and it starts from £50.
Smells in a car have a way of lingering. Cigarette smoke, a damp carpet, a wet dog or a spilt drink can leave an odour that stays long after the cause has gone, held in the cabin air and the soft surfaces around it. A fragrance can mask it for a while, but the smell tends to return.
Since 2021, Ride Effect has looked after cars to one standard: treat every vehicle as if it were our own, with no shortcuts. The Odour Eliminator is added to your valet or detail on your drive, at your workplace or at our unit, in Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Northampton and Towcester.
The Usual Sources of Car Smells
Tobacco smoke is one of the odours the Odour Eliminator is designed to deal with. It works its way into the roof lining, the seat fabric and the carpets, and it can be noticeable to anyone who gets into the car, even when nobody has smoked in it for some time. Ozone breaks down and neutralises smoke at the molecular level.
Pets and damp are two other familiar causes. A dog that travels in the car leaves its own smell in the fabric, while a leak or a wet carpet can leave a musty odour, often with mould not far behind. Food lingers too, from takeaways eaten on the move to milk spilt in a footwell, and a family car with children’s seats in the back sees its share of both.

Odour Neutralised
The ozone generator stands on the rear floor, ready to release ozone into the cabin.
Ozone spreads through the cabin. Where it meets an odour particle, the two react and break apart: that reaction is oxidation.
Every odour particle has been broken down. Ozone breaks down and neutralises unpleasant smells, bacteria, mould and smoke at the molecular level, through oxidation.
Where It Gathers
Smoke
Smoke rises and settles into the roof lining, the headrests and the seat fabric, which is why the smell stays in the cabin.
Where It Gathers
Pets
Pet smells collect low down, in the rear seat fabric, the carpets and the boot, wherever a dog usually travels.
Where It Gathers
Damp and Mould
A damp, musty smell comes from moisture held in the carpets and under the mats, most often in the footwells and the boot.
Where It Gathers
Food
Spills and crumbs work into the seats, the footwells and around the centre console, and the smell of food can linger in the cabin.

How Ozone Clears Odours
Ozone, written O3, is a form of oxygen made up of three oxygen atoms, and it is an unstable gas. The Odour Eliminator machine generates ozone, and because it is unstable, it reacts with what it meets. That reaction is oxidation, and it is how the treatment breaks down and neutralises unpleasant smells, bacteria, mould and smoke at the molecular level.
This is the difference between removing a smell and covering it. A fragrance sits alongside an odour, so the two mix in the air and the original smell comes back once the fragrance fades. Oxidation works on the odour itself, breaking it down and neutralising it, which is why we use ozone for smells that have settled into a car and a valet alone has not shifted.
When Damp Leaves Mould Behind
A leak or a damp carpet can leave mould on the seats, door cards and roof lining. Two films from our own mould removal jobs: the mould being cleaned out of one car, and another car’s seats before and after.
I have just had a premium valet by Ride Effect, and if I had just one word to encapsulate it, it would be ‘wow’. Clearly car valeting and detailing is a passion to Raj, and he completed his work with a smile, and with the love and attention as if the car was his own.

Car Odour Removal and an Extensive Clean

The Odour Eliminator can be added to any valet or detail, and it pairs most naturally with an Extensive Clean. A lingering smell often starts in a spill on the carpet or hair in the seats, and the Extensive Clean works on those surfaces: the cabin is steam cleaned to leave it clean and disinfected, and the mats and carpets are washed and extracted.
With the ozone treatment added, the places where a smell can start are deep cleaned and the cabin itself is treated in a single visit. Where a dog is the source, our pet hair removal add on can be included as well, taking the hair out of the seat fabric, carpets and boot during the same appointment.

When Ozone Treatment Makes Sense
If you have just bought a used car, it is a good time to add it. However good a used car looks, it can carry the smells of its previous owner, from smoke to a dog that always travelled in the back, and they are often most noticeable on the first warm day with the windows closed. Adding the Odour Eliminator to an Extensive Clean means you start with a cabin that has been cleaned and treated.
It is also worth adding before you sell, as a smell is one of the first things a buyer notices when they sit in a car. A car that has been in storage, or one where a leak has left the carpet damp, can benefit in the same way once the cause of the damp has been put right.

What Decides the Final Price
The Odour Eliminator starts from £50. The final price depends on the vehicle size and how severe the odour is, so a small car with a faint smell of food is priced differently from a large vehicle that has been smoked in for years. We confirm the price once we have seen the car, always before any work starts, and prices may also vary depending on location.
To book, get in touch with the vehicle, the valet or detail you would like and the smell you want treated. A £10 deposit per vehicle secures your appointment and is taken off the final balance. If anything is not as it should be afterwards, contact us within 24 hours with photos and we will arrange a time to put it right.
How Much Does Car Odour Removal Cost?

Can You Get Rid of Smoke Smell in a Car?
Yes, smoke is one of the odours our Odour Eliminator is designed to treat. The machine generates ozone, which breaks down and neutralises smoke at the molecular level through oxidation, and adding it to an Extensive Clean means the roof lining, seats and carpets are deep cleaned during the same visit.
How Does Ozone Remove Odours?
Ozone removes odours through oxidation. The Odour Eliminator machine generates ozone (O3), an unstable gas, which breaks down and neutralises unpleasant smells, bacteria, mould and smoke at the molecular level. Because it works on the odour itself, it suits smells that have settled into a cabin, where a fragrance would only mask them.
Can Ozone Remove a Damp or Mould Smell?
Yes, ozone breaks down and neutralises mould and unpleasant smells at the molecular level through oxidation, so it suits the musty odour damp leaves in a car. The treatment works on the smell, not on the source of the damp, so a leak that is still letting water in should be put right as well.
Is Odour Removal Included in a Valet?
No, the Odour Eliminator is an add on, so it is added to a valet or a detail when you book and priced from £50. Every valet ends with an air blast that leaves the vehicle smelling clean and fresh, while the ozone treatment is for stubborn smells that have settled in over time.
Which Smells Can the Odour Eliminator Treat?
The Odour Eliminator breaks down and neutralises unpleasant smells, bacteria, mould and smoke at the molecular level through oxidation. That includes the odours that commonly linger in a car, such as tobacco smoke, pets, damp and mould, and food or drink that has been spilt in the cabin.
Is Ozone Treatment a Good Idea for a Used Car?
Yes, it is a sensible choice for a used car, which can carry the smells of its previous owner, from smoke to pets, that you only notice once it is yours. Added to an Extensive Clean, it means the cabin is deep cleaned and treated with ozone in one visit, so you start with a fresh interior.
